Robopocalypse wanted very badly to be World War Z, a fantastic zombie novel that's written as an oral history (a la Studs Terkel) based on interviews from around the world, making it a truly global struggle. Unfortunately, this only focuses on five or six characters who all eventually interact in one way or another, making for a much smaller story. We hear bits and pieces, but never get a sense of a global event.

Plus switching from zombies to robots means that there is, literally, an off switch. So the war ends and.... yep, that's it. Game over. It ended and... yeah, whatever.

Check out World War Z, leave this well enough alone.

I just finished the novel, and I have to say, it's one of the best books I've read recently. I wrote sort of a long treatise about it's place in the Age of Hysteria and why it's important here:

Thank you for including My Sweet Life in Paris...light and funny is what's calling to me right now. I sometimes wonder if all great literature has to have tragedy and pain. (My adult child asked me once if there was any Newberry Award book he could read, where somebody or their pet didn't die.)

I hope my sweet life in Paris include meat recipes and not just carb-loaded desserts. :)

I also appreciate, without knowing why, the use of the word mean-spirited in the Sedaris review. I just like the word.
